A few years ago, laser hair removal was not recommended for people with darker skin tones, in particular those with black skin or dark skin types. As laser energy targets the pigment in the hair follicle, dark skin can be at risk of burning as laser can be attracted to the skin rather than the pigment in the hair. However, lasers now have the longer 1064mm wavelength for black skin and darker skin tones, which can differentiate between skin and hair pigment.
