FUE – or Follicular Unit Extraction is a hair transplant process that replaces lost or thinning hair by taking healthy follicles from a donor area of the head (usually the back and sides) and transplanting them to a thinning area of the head, such as the hairline or crown. FUE is a minimally invasive hair restoration option that demands skill and precision and achieves the best and most natural result.
The difference between FUE and FUT is that during follicular unit transplantation (FUT) the surgeon removes an entire strip of donor skin from the back of the head and extracts the hair follicles from this strip. However, in FUE, the individual follicles are taken directly from the scalp.
In FUT, the entire strip of the hair is harvested in one go and then dissected into individual follicles later. This leaves a very distinctive and noticeable linear scar along the back of the head.
During FUE, groups of between one and four hairs are individually extracted from the scalp and transplanted to the new area of the scalp, trying to mimic the pattern of the hair that used to grow there. This leaves little to no noticeable scarring on the scalp.
When it comes to recovery time, there is also a noticeable difference between FUE and FUT. In FUE hair transplants, there is minimal bleeding, and recovery is usually complete within seven days with almost no side effects. However, during FUT, as an entire strip of the scalp has been excised, it often takes weeks for the scars to heal over.
The FUE hair transplant results far outweigh the results of FUT hair transplants, leaving a high-quality, natural finish to the hair.

Many patients who travel abroad are often told that they can have 4000 grafts in one sitting. This is usually very hard to achieve. Often patients are misled and the difference between number of grafts and number of hairs which is not clearly explained. A graft is defined as a single ‘Follicular Unit’ which can have one hair, two hairs, three hairs and sometimes four or more hair follicles. So 2000 grafts can have sometimes 3000 to 4000 hairs depending on individual hair grafts.
Is hair transplantation permanent?
The donor area selected for the transplant operation contains the sturdiest hair follicles. For this reason, the patient will not lose the hair on the part of their head where the hair transplant operation was conducted. The transplanted hair will be permanent in almost every case.
Which hair transplant method is suitable for me?
It is not possible to decide on the hair transplant method without conducting the necessary tests and preliminary examinations. Do you need anesthesia for a hair transplant?
Yes, local anesthesia will be applied to the patient’s scalp by an anesthetist before the operation. The patient will be fully awake, but they will not feel anything on their scalp during or after the surgery for a certain period.
Should I shave my head before my hair transplant?
In most cases, yes. However, the patient does not need to do anything before they arrive at the clinic because their head will be shaved before the surgery if necessary.
Does the hair grow back in the donor area?
Technically, as the hair follicles are removed from the donor area, they will not grow back. However, thanks to the advanced technique of choosing individual hair grafts in the FUE and DHI methods, it is impossible to see the absence of hair in the donor areas once the patient is fully healed. Please keep in mind that the same does not apply to the FUT hair transplant.
