Morpheus8 for Stretch Marks: Does It Really Work?

Morpheus8 for Stretch Marks: Does It Really Work?

Stretch marks are one of the most common skin concerns we see at our Bromley clinic, and also one of the most misunderstood. Creams and oils rarely make a visible difference because stretch marks form deep within the dermis, well beyond where topical products can reach. Morpheus8, which combines radiofrequency energy with microneedling, is one of the few treatments that targets this deeper layer of damage directly. In this guide, we explain exactly how it works, what kind of results you can realistically expect, and whether it could be the right option for your stretch marks.

What Are Stretch Marks and Why Are They So Difficult to Treat?

Stretch marks (known clinically as striae distensae) occur when the skin stretches or shrinks rapidly, causing the collagen and elastin fibres in the dermis to tear. The body repairs these tears with scar tissue, which is what creates the visible lines on the skin’s surface.

When they first appear, stretch marks tend to be reddish or purple (striae rubrae). Over time, they fade to a pale, silvery-white colour (striae alba) as blood flow to the area decreases. Both types involve structural changes deep in the skin, which is precisely why surface-level treatments like body butters, bio-oils and exfoliating scrubs fail to produce meaningful improvement.

Common causes of stretch marks

  • Pregnancy: Rapid abdominal expansion during the second and third trimesters. A study published in the British Journal of Dermatology found that up to 90% of pregnant women develop stretch marks.
  • Weight fluctuation: Both rapid weight gain and significant weight loss can cause stretch marks on the stomach, thighs, hips and upper arms.
  • Growth spurts during puberty: Teenagers frequently develop stretch marks on the back, thighs and hips during periods of rapid growth.
  • Muscle building: Quick increases in muscle mass, particularly in the shoulders, chest and upper arms, stretch the overlying skin faster than it can adapt.
  • Genetics and hormonal factors: Cortisol levels, skin elasticity and a family history of stretch marks all influence susceptibility.

How Morpheus8 Treats Stretch Marks

Morpheus8 is a fractional radiofrequency (RF) microneedling device that works on a fundamentally different level to standard microneedling or topical treatments. It uses a matrix of 24 gold-coated microneedles to deliver controlled radiofrequency energy directly into the dermis, at depths of up to 4mm (and up to 8mm with the Morpheus8 Body handpiece).

This dual-action approach triggers two complementary processes. The microneedles create tiny, controlled micro-injuries that activate the body’s wound-healing response, stimulating the production of fresh collagen and elastin. Simultaneously, the RF energy heats the deeper tissue, causing existing collagen to contract and tighten while further accelerating new collagen synthesis.

Because stretch marks are essentially scars in the dermis where collagen has been damaged or depleted, this combination of deep remodelling and new collagen production is what makes Morpheus8 particularly well-suited to addressing them. The treatment reconstructs the skin’s structural foundation rather than simply resurfacing the top layer.

Why Morpheus8 is different from standard microneedling

Traditional microneedling uses needles that typically reach 1–2mm into the skin. While this can improve mild surface texture, it rarely penetrates deeply enough to affect the dermal layer where stretch marks originate. Morpheus8’s combination of deeper needle penetration and RF energy means it reaches and remodels the tissue where the actual damage exists.

Importantly, the gold-coated needles insulate the skin’s surface, delivering energy from the tips rather than across the epidermis. This reduces the risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, making Morpheus8 suitable for all skin types and tones, including Fitzpatrick types IV–VI.

What Does the Clinical Evidence Say?

RF microneedling for stretch marks is supported by a growing body of published research.

A 2024 systematic review and meta-analysis in Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, which analysed 11 clinical controlled studies, found that microneedle radiofrequency treatment produced a statistically significant improvement in stretch mark appearance (SMD: 0.57, 95% CI 0.20–0.94, P = 0.003). Patient satisfaction with RF microneedling was also significantly higher than with non-laser treatments. Source: PubMed

A separate 2024 meta-analysis comparing fractional microneedle radiofrequency (FMR) with fractional CO₂ laser found that both treatments delivered comparable clinical improvements for stretch marks. However, FMR was associated with a significantly lower incidence of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (OR: 0.24, 95% CI: 0.08–0.70), a particularly relevant finding for patients with darker skin tones. A 2021 study published in Lasers in Surgery and Medicine also demonstrated that combining fractional RF microneedling with fractional CO₂ laser produced slightly better clinical outcomes than either treatment alone, confirming the value of RF energy in deep tissue remodelling for stretch marks. Which Body Areas Can Morpheus8 Treat for Stretch Marks?

One of the advantages of Morpheus8 is its versatility. The device can be used on virtually any area where stretch marks appear, with the Body handpiece specifically designed for larger treatment zones.

Stomach and abdomen

This is the most commonly treated area, particularly for post-pregnancy stretch marks or those caused by weight fluctuation. The Morpheus8 Body tip is well-suited to the abdomen because it can cover larger surface areas while reaching the depth needed to address both skin laxity and stretch mark scarring simultaneously.

Thighs and hips

Stretch marks on the inner and outer thighs are common following puberty, weight changes and pregnancy. The adjustable needle depth allows practitioners to tailor the treatment to the thickness of skin in these areas, which tends to be thicker than facial skin.

Breasts and chest

Stretch marks on the breasts often develop during pregnancy, puberty or after significant weight change. Morpheus8 can treat these areas gently, with needle depth and energy settings adjusted for the sensitivity of the tissue.

Upper arms and shoulders

Particularly common in men who have built muscle quickly, stretch marks on the biceps and shoulders respond well to RF microneedling because the skin in these areas tends to have good underlying structure to build upon.

Buttocks and lower back

Growth-related stretch marks during teenage years frequently appear in these areas. Morpheus8 can target these zones effectively, with most patients noticing improvements in both the texture and colour of the marks.

What to Expect: The Treatment Process

Before your session

A consultation at our Bromley clinic is the essential first step. During this appointment, we assess your stretch marks (their age, depth, colour and location) and discuss your goals. Not all stretch marks are identical; newer, reddish marks (striae rubrae) typically respond more quickly than older, silvery-white marks (striae alba), although both can be improved.

During the treatment

A topical numbing cream is applied to the treatment area approximately 30–45 minutes before the session begins. The Morpheus8 handpiece is then passed across the skin, with the microneedles delivering RF energy in a controlled grid pattern. Treatment time varies by area: a focused zone like the upper arms may take 20–30 minutes, while a full abdominal treatment typically takes 45–60 minutes. Most patients describe the sensation as a warm, prickling feeling rather than anything painful.

After your session

Expect some redness and mild swelling for 2–3 days, similar to moderate sunburn. Pinpoint scabbing is normal and will resolve within a week. You can return to daily activities the following day, though we recommend avoiding intense exercise, direct sun exposure and active skincare ingredients (retinoids, AHAs) for 5–7 days.

Results and Timeline

Morpheus8 results develop gradually because the treatment relies on your body’s own collagen production cycle. Here is a realistic timeline:

TimeframeWhat to Expect
Days 1–3Redness and swelling subside. Skin may feel tight or warm.
Weeks 2–4Initial texture improvements become noticeable. Skin starts to feel smoother.
Weeks 4–8Visible reduction in stretch mark depth and discolouration as collagen remodelling accelerates.
Months 3–6Full results emerge. Skin continues to firm and tighten as collagen and elastin production peaks.

Most patients require 3 to 4 sessions spaced 4–6 weeks apart for optimal results on stretch marks. Newer (red/purple) stretch marks tend to respond within fewer sessions, while older (white/silver) marks may benefit from the full course. Results typically last 12–18 months, with annual maintenance sessions recommended to sustain the improvements.

How Much Does Morpheus8 for Stretch Marks Cost?

Morpheus8 body treatments in the UK typically range from £350 to £1,200 per session, depending on the size of the area being treated and the clinic’s location. A smaller, focused zone (such as the upper arms) sits at the lower end of this range, while a full abdominal treatment or multiple areas will be towards the higher end.

Because most patients need 3–4 sessions for stretch marks, it is worth asking about package pricing when you book your consultation. Many clinics, including ours, offer course discounts that bring the per-session cost down significantly.

At House of Aesthetics in Bromley, we offer a free consultation where we can assess your stretch marks, recommend a personalised treatment plan and provide a clear cost breakdown before you commit. We also offer flexible payment options through Klarna, Clearpay and Omni Capital to help spread the cost.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Morpheus8 Stretch Mark Treatment?

Morpheus8 is suitable for most adults with stretch marks, regardless of skin colour or type. You may be a particularly good candidate if:

  • Your stretch marks are affecting your confidence or how you feel about your body
  • You have tried topical treatments without success
  • Your stretch marks are in areas where skin laxity is also a concern (stomach after pregnancy, for example)
  • You have darker skin and are concerned about the pigmentation risks associated with laser treatments
  • You prefer a non-surgical approach with minimal downtime

Morpheus8 is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or for patients with active skin infections in the treatment area. During your consultation, we will review your full medical history to confirm suitability.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Morpheus8 completely remove stretch marks?

Morpheus8 significantly reduces the appearance of stretch marks by rebuilding collagen in the dermis, but it is important to set realistic expectations. Most patients see a noticeable improvement in the depth, texture and colour of their stretch marks. Complete removal of all visible traces is unlikely with any current treatment, though the improvement can be substantial enough that marks become far less noticeable.

Is Morpheus8 painful on the body?

Most patients find the treatment very manageable. A topical numbing cream is applied beforehand, and the sensation during treatment is typically described as a warm, prickling feeling. Areas with thinner skin may feel slightly more sensitive, but discomfort is generally minimal.

How many sessions of Morpheus8 do I need for stretch marks?

For stretch marks, we typically recommend 3 to 4 sessions spaced 4–6 weeks apart. Newer stretch marks may respond within 2–3 sessions, while older, more established marks usually benefit from the full course. Your practitioner will tailor the plan to your specific situation during your consultation.

Can Morpheus8 treat old, white stretch marks?

Yes. While newer (red/purple) stretch marks tend to respond more quickly, Morpheus8 can also improve older, silvery-white stretch marks (striae alba). The RF energy reaches deep enough to stimulate collagen remodelling even in mature scar tissue. Older marks may simply require the full course of sessions to see the best results.

Is Morpheus8 safe for dark skin?

Yes. One of Morpheus8’s key advantages over ablative lasers is its lower risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. The gold-coated needles deliver energy beneath the skin’s surface rather than heating the epidermis, which makes it a safer option for patients with Fitzpatrick skin types IV–VI. A 2024 meta-analysis confirmed that RF microneedling carries a significantly lower risk of PIH compared to fractional CO₂ laser for stretch mark treatment.

Can I combine Morpheus8 with other treatments for better results?

Absolutely. Some patients combine Morpheus8 with PRP (platelet-rich plasma) therapy to enhance collagen stimulation, or with skin boosters like Profhilo for additional hydration and skin quality improvement. Your practitioner can recommend combinations based on your individual goals.
